Dirt Oval Rules

General Rules:

See karting general rules for those rules that apply to all racing at the facility. Just because it’s not listed here specifically, doesn’t mean its permitted to do. If questionable, ask before you come.

No alcohol or drugs permitted at BCRP. PERIOD.


Safety Rules:

Mowers must have a working tethered kill switch.

All glass must be removed from the mower.

No one is allowed on the track while race or practice is in progress. Track workers will allow you onto the racetrack when it is safe. Running out on the racetrack may result in an automatic disqualification.

Long pants & sleeves, neck brace, full face helmet, and boots/closed toed shoes mandatory at minimum.

Race Procedure:
You cannot do excessive repair work to your mower while on the track. If it needs repair, you’ll be pushed to the pit area/infield, & you’re done for that race. Things like pulling out a fender while still on the track will be permitted. Corner workers discretion. No tools will be allowed on the racetrack for mechanical repair. Drivers are allowed 1 breakdown during heat races and 2 during main events.

In the event of a caution, everyone involved in the caution will go to the rear. Being involved in the caution consist of you contacting another mower that resulted in the caution period. If you spin to avoid it but contact another mower or the wall, you are a part of the caution. If you spin to avoid it but do not contact anything, you will retain your spot.

Heat races will be 5 laps. Features will consist of 15 laps. (No qualifying in 2024)

All races will have a minute per lap time limit. (15 laps or 15 minutes for example)

If you are not in pre-stage for your race you forfeit your spot. The only exceptions are back-to-back races.

All drivers must attend drivers’ meetings. Failure to do so will result in starting last, disqualification, loss of money earned, etc. Track officials will determine level depending on circumstances.

No limit of classes a mower/driver can run if the mower and or driver meets the rules.

Mower Rules

All mowers must have visible numbers on both sides of the hood. (Hoods and fenders mandatory)

All stock mowers must run gasoline. Modified mowers can run alcohol.

Stock Mowers must run lawn mower tires. Tires and wheels must be the same size (+/- ¼”) on both sides of either axle in all stock classes. Modified classes can run either lawn mower tires or Hoosier or similar racing tires. Modified classes can have staggered tires. Tires must have tubes or bead lock wheels. Wheels must be made of steel or aluminum. (No plastic)

Seats must be lawnmower style seats and should be on the center line of the frame of the mower for all stock classes. Go cart seats are allowed in all modified classes.
Mowers must have onboard starting system in working order. Must be push button or key start switch. Modified and open classes can use remote starters. If the mower needs restarted while on track, driver must push the mower to the gate opening to be restarted. This will count as a caution if applicable.

Must have air filters. All batteries must be secured.

Working brakes mandatory. Centrifugal clutches are allowed in all classes.

Mowers must have a deck/simulated deck & footholds made so that the foot can’t become entangled.

Front axle and steering may be reinforced, fabricated, or substituted. Exhaust design should be opened, and it must terminate away from driver and competitors.

Driveline can be modified from the engine pulley to the rear wheels using lawnmower parts only.
Can run live axle. Gear boxes are only allowed in modified classes. Any transmission with chains must have sufficient guards to protect the driver. Tech discretion.

Engines must be vertical shaft engines manufactured for use in lawnmower ​for all stock classes. Horizontal engines will be allowed in modified/open classes only.

All mowers must have front and back bumpers. Bumpers are to be no wider than your tires. Mowers shall have no exposed sharp edges.

Stock classes must run smaller size rims/tires on the front versus rear of mower (modified classes can run same size front and back)

Mower Frames

Mower frames should consist of actual factory frames; however, with the variety of existing mowers and different building styles we do allow tubular frames if it maintains a mower appearance. Tech discretion.

Width- All mowers must measure 42” or less from outside sidewall to outside sidewall. ¼” tolerance.

Length- All mowers must measure 60” or less center to center of the wheels- maximum of 80” for overall length. ¼” tolerance.

Engine/Drivetrain Rules:
Stock Class Engine/Transmission Rules- These rules apply to all stock classes unless otherwise noted.

Engines must be vertical shaft engines manufactured for use in lawnmower.

Transmission must maintain all working forward gears. Transmission can be locked in for safety purposes.

Governor can be unhooked. Stator and magnets may be removed.

Carburetors must be stock for the orientation of the motor (Cannot make modifications to the stock carburetor, cannot remove choke, cannot put in bigger jets, etc.)  The only modifications allowed to a stock carburetor is running an after-marker air filter.

No overhead cams allowed. Must have stock cam with no modifications to the camshaft allowed. Porting and polishing are not allowed.

Engines are subject to compression test. Can run vacuum fed external fuel pump- no electric fuel pumps.

Advance keys in flywheel are allowed (Except in junior stock class)
Valve keepers may be upgraded using stock OM parts (Stock springs must be maintained)

Orientation of the motor must remain the same (Example 17 hp motor must have 17 hp head) Exception noted in stock single cylinder flathead.

Stock Classes:

Kids Stock: Ages 5 to 9

Must be factory lawnmower with no modifications to the engine.

Deck can be removed. Must have blades removed!!!!

A parent or guardian needs to remain on the track during race.

Junior Stock: Ages 9-14.

Engine must be Briggs single cylinder flathead 12.5 hp plus the below requirements:

Must run a peerless transmission with all forward gears in working order.  There will be no gearing requirements. No advance key in flywheel

Stock Single Cylinder Flathead: (Ages 13 and up) maximum compression of 125 pounds. Can run 11 hp heads on 12 hp mower in this class only.

Stock Single Cylinder Overhead Valve: (Ages 13 and up) up to 17.5 hp engine. Maximum compression of 150 pounds.

Stock Twin Cylinder Flathead: (Ages 13 and up)

Stock V-twin: (14 to 23 hp)- (Ages 13 and up) Same rules of other stock classes. No aftermarket cams.

Must run 16/17.5 mower tires.  Must run 6” on the front and 8” on the back.

Modified Classes:

Modified classes are allowed aftermarket parts, make modifications to the motor and rear of mowers.

Legends: (Ages 50 and up) Engine must be vertical shaft single cylinder.

Modified V-Twin: (14 to 16 hp) No more than 30,000th over standard bore.

Modified V-Twin: (18 to 23 hp)                                   Modified Single Cylinder Flathead:

Modified Overhead Valve:                                            Modified Twin Cylinder Flathead:

Women’s Division: (No V-Twins in women’s division)

Open Unlimited: All V-Twin engines ranging from 23 hp up and any engine with no more than 2 cylinders.

Note: We will have tech at every event. We will check compliance of various rules. If you are illegal, we will disqualify you. If you have a tech question, ask it before you show up.

 

 

Protest Rules:

The inspection team/officials have the full discretion to inspect any mower at any time.

In order to protest the winning mower, the protester must finish in the top 3 in the same race.  ​

All protest requires a $100 fee. If the protested mower is found to be legal, the driver of the protested mower will receive $50 and the remaining $50 will go to the tech inspector. If the protested mower is found illegal, the protestor will receive half of their money back. Protest must be told to the tech inspector within 5 minutes of completion of the main event. Protest must be in writing.

The officials can impound any mower that is being protested. Impounded mowers will be inspected at the conclusion of the main event. Officials may at any time check the top 3 finishers in any class.

This check could involve removing the heads and inspecting, measuring, and documenting all components of the motor. Inspections will be performed by the track technical inspector.

Drivers may refuse to be inspected however, refusing an inspection will result in disqualification from that event and loss of all money earned.

Any visual protest must be filed within 5 minutes of the completion of the final practice session. No visual protest will be accepted after that time for that event.

The inspectors’ decision will be upheld by staff!
